Almost two years later

That's the way to go! I adopted two brothers / "litermates" years ago, and they were inseparable until one passed. He was lonely, so we got a kitten companion / former barn cat. My goodness, the kitten was afraid of everyone and everything, until curiosity gave him some courage, came out to meet the long-time resident, and became his "fan club". I've never seen a cat have so much respect for another cat! Many happy years to both Malcolm and Annabella, and to their "person(s)"!
